Larry Enoch Gartman, a devoted father, brother, and friend, passed away on August 21, 2025, in Woodville, Texas, at the age of 71. Born on September 20, 1953, in Freeport, Texas, Larry's journey through life was marked by his commitment to his family, his profession in construction, and his remarkable spirit of resilience.
Larry dedicated most of his career to the construction and contracting field, specializing in commercial remodeling. Towards the latter part of his career, he found great fulfillment working for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) in maintenance, followed by a fulfilling role at Wyndham as a teacher. In this capacity, he touched many lives by helping inmates acquire technical skills. His dedication did not go unnoticed, as he was honored as Teacher of the Year within the prison system and made notable contributions to environmental management, including building bat houses for the state during a critical time for bat populations.
An individual who valued education, Larry had an extensive background in drafting, computers, and construction. His passion for learning kept him engaged in various classes and programs where he continuously sought to enhance his skill set. His pursuits extended beyond his professional life; he was skilled in cabinet design, building computers, raising cattle and bees, and gardening. Larry’s cooking and baking were also well-loved, with his chocolate and coconut cream pies being cherished gifts for friends.
Larry was a man of strong character, known for his determination and perfectionism. His fun sense of humor shone through during challenging times, bringing levity to those around him. He embodied resilience, fighting through several health challenges in recent years while maintaining a positive outlook. Even as he faced adversity, he cherished moments spent visiting with his family and sharing jokes, demonstrating an indomitable spirit until the very end. He was "tougher than nails"!
He is survived by his two sons, Aaron Gartman of Woodville and Gary Gartman (Stephanie) of Brazoria; step children Tonya Rice (Tony) and Tina Spoon. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Aaron Gartman, Kandace Alexander, Cami Gartman, Nicole Gartman, Mathew Gartman, Daniel Gartman, Kimmy Gartman, Ava Rice, and Grayson Gilmore. He is also remembered by his sister, Lanora Reed (Ron), and brothers, Mark Gartman (Patty) and Dennis Gartman.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch and Ruthie Gartman, and his beloved grandson, Hunter Gartman, who left this world at the young age of 24.
A memorial service in honor of Larry will be held on September 13, 2025, at Lufkin Memorial Chapel, located at 400 South First Street, Lufkin, TX 75904, beginning at 2:00 PM and concluding at 3:00 PM. Fellowship and lunch will be hosted by family at Huntington United Methodist Church immediately following; located at 458 US - 69 Huntington, TX 75949. Larry's life was one of dedication, humor, and love, leaving behind cherished memories for all who knew him.
