James Brent Sr., affectionately known as Jimmy and lovingly called "Pappaw" by many, passed away in his home in Crockett on October 11, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born on August 24, 1942, in East Texas, James lived a life rooted in hard work, faith, and family. A proud Texan through and through, he carried with him the values of dedication and resilience from an early age. He served honorably in the United States Army, a testament to his commitment to service and country.
Throughout his life, James was no stranger to labor. Whether he was building houses, selling produce, or fireworks, he was always working with his hands and heart. In his earlier years, when he wasn’t working, he could often be found fishing—a pastime he truly enjoyed and one that brought him peace and joy.
James was a man of Christian faith and found strength and guidance through his beliefs. He was known for his deep love for his family and was a central figure in the lives of his children and grandchildren. To them and many others who knew him well, he was simply “Pappaw”—a name that carried warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support.
He is survived by his children: James Jr., Jason Brent, Philip Brent, Jennifer Brent Axelson, Justin Brent, Jeremy Brent; and his adopted daughters: Tammy Wick, Cody Hammons, Carly Sherrod, and Amanda Downs. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Kayla, Courtney, Kirsten, Jacob, Aiden, Natalie, Nathan, Adaline, Hailey, Allison, MacKenzie, Joey, Meagan, Chelsea, Harli, and Zoey Brent. Sisters, Bobbie Richardson, Polly Kizer, special nephew David Mueller and many nieces, nephews, great grandkids and other loved ones.
James was preceded in death by his beloved children Johnnie, Melinda, Dianne, and Jamie "Dee-Dee". He also mourned the loss of his close brother Eddie Brent and sister Cora.
Though time and distance may have separated him from some of his grandchildren and even great-grandchildren, James remained “Pappaw” to all—a title that spoke to his enduring presence and love.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life will be held on November 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Good Shepherd Fellowship, 401 S 7th Street in Crockett, TX, with Pastor Leon Wallace officiating.
