Cyrus Charles Paulus

Cyrus Charles Paulus, a devoted family man, respected veteran, and beloved friend to many, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, in Lufkin, Texas. He was born on January 5, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, and throughout his 77 years left an enduring mark on all who were privileged to know him.

Cyrus grew up in the vibrant community of San Antonio before moving with his family to Ligonier, Indiana. He completed his education at Ligonier High School, graduating in 1968. Shortly afterward, faced with the call of service during a challenging time in American history, Cyrus joined the U.S. Navy on August 19, 1969. It was a decision that would shape his life profoundly. His career in the Navy spanned two decades; he served with distinction and commitment, ultimately retiring on August 31, 1989, as Aviation Support Equipment Technician First Class aboard the U.S.S. Iwo Jima.

After concluding his honorable military service, Cyrus settled in Lufkin, Texas, where he built a new chapter for himself and his family. He began work at Lufkin Industries and dedicated 21 years to the company, earning the respect of his colleagues with the same tireless spirit and integrity that characterized his time in the Navy. He retired from Lufkin Industries in 2011.

Cyrus was a man of varied interests and lively passions. He found immense joy in fishing, and his skills as a carpenter and woodworker were highly regarded by those who knew him. An enthusiastic home cook, Cyrus loved barbecue and took pride in preparing delicious meals for friends and family. Beyond these hobbies, he cherished spending time with his Veteran friends at the Senior Center, strengthening the camaraderie and sense of belonging that meant so much to him.

Those closest to Cyrus will remember his loving and playful nature. To Cyrus, everyone was a friend, or would soon become part of his ever-expanding circle of family. His boundless warmth brought comfort to all, and he lived each day with an unmistakable gung-ho spirit—approaching military service, business ventures, family life, and his connection to fellow Veterans with equal measures of enthusiasm and commitment.

Cyrus’s life was enriched by his family. He is lovingly survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Coyle and Amanda Byerly; his son, Eugene Paulus; his sisters, Janie Dzina and Sharnon Swank; and his brother, Sam Paulus. He is preceded in death by his cherished wife, Doreen Paulus; his father, Eugene Paulus; his mother, Catalina Paulus; his brother, Joe Paulus; and his sister, Anita Browning. The memory and influence of his love and wisdom remain deeply held by his surviving family.

To honor his life, visitation will be held on July 7, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Lufkin Memorial Chapel, 400 South First Street, Lufkin, Texas. A funeral service will follow at the same location on July 7 at 4:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held on July 14, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas.

Cyrus Charles Paulus touched the lives of all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and spirited love of life will live on in the memories of his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have called him a companion.
