Collette Renee Mitchell

January 10, 1958 — August 17, 2025

Collette Renee Mitchell passed away on August 17, 2025 in Nacogdoches, Texas at the age of 67. She was born on January 10th 1958, to Clyde and Marzell Mitchell in Denver, Colorado. She was the baby of the family, having two sisters, Farol and Claudia who were 16 and 11 years old respectively at the time of her birth.

She married Page Smith, Jr. on February 2, 1980. They had two children, Alexander and Phillip. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1993.

Despite never climbing the career ladder or being able to use her brilliant mind in academia, she was able to inspire curiosity and spark the joy of scientific understanding, particularly in her two sons. She had a keen interest in linguistics, arts, and history as well. She graced this world with kindness and blessed it with patience.

Her life was marked with struggle and pain. In 2003, after her children had already moved out of the house, her life was greatly altered when she was attacked. That incident would be the end of her ability to work and the beginning of severe chronic pain, and it very much dulled the sharp mind that she had before. Her pain became even greater in 2024 when she was diagnosed with cancer that had already metastasized throughout her body.

She is finally at rest and without the pain of the latter part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Marzell Mitchell, and her sisters Farol Burks and Claudia Miller.

She leaves behind her sons and their families, Alexander Smith, Phillip and Emily Smith; her grandchildren Bianca, Xander-Ray, Benjamin, Rachel, Hannah, Peter, Chloe, Ezra, and John; her niece Wendy and Ed Johnson and children, Tyler and Carter; her nephew Brian and Christina Miller and children, Sierra and Lillian; and her niece Shelly and Mike and children Blake and Emily.
