Peggy Jane Barfield, 85, passed away Friday, September 2, 2022, at UT Health Tyler Hospital. She was born August 6, 1937, in Nacogdoches, Texas to Carl H. Barfield Sr. and Zelma M. Spencer.
Peggy graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1956 and was especially proud to have achieved her high school diploma. She entered the workforce soon after completing high school. Peggy moved to Houston, Texas where she excelled in management with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for over 30 years. She married and had 3 children who she raised as a single parent, almost unheard of at the time. Peggy returned to Nacogdoches to care for her elderly mother who she cherished very much until her passing in 1997.
Peggy reconnected with and later married her former classmate, JD Cook, in 2004. Together, they embarked on a second career driving a commercial semi-truck/18-wheeler across the country at 65 years of age until JD's passing in 2011. Peggy then retired and dedicated the rest of her life to her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as her wonderful church, Perritte Methodist.
Peggy Jane was a loyal and dedicated member of Perritte Memorial United Methodist Church for over 20yrs. She loved and cared for her church and church family very much and was deeply loved and cared for by them in the last few years of her life. A special note of appreciation goes out to Mrs. Vikki White and Pastor Brad McKenzie for being so helpful and caring.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents; Carl and Zelma Barfield, husband; John David 'JD' Cook, son; Ronald J. Radley Jr., brothers; Carl H. Barfield Jr., Clyde "Shug" Barfield, sister; Margaret Barfield Crisp, as well as brother-in-law William "Bill" Crisp, sister-in-laws; Laverne Barfield and Deloris "Dee Dee" Crisp Barfield. She is survived by a daughter; Rhonda A. Radley, son; Ros S. Radley, grandchildren; Eric Sitton, Nicole Sitton-Bolgiano, Corinn Radley, Vanessa Radley, and great-grandchildren; Aubrey Bolgiano, Allie Bolgiano, and Robin Sitton, brother; George C. Barfield, sister; Joyce Barfield McSwain and brother-in-law Aubie McSwain. She also had numerous nieces and nephews, grand and great nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and church family members, all of whom she loved and adored.
Peggy Jane Barfield was a truly exceptional woman who lived a full life. She was incredibly strong in the face of great adversity and always kept a smile on her face and a song in her heart. All who knew or ever met her would be moved by her beautiful personality and amazing spirit. Her life was a blessing to each and every person; she will be truly missed.
A memorial service will be held in her honor by her loved ones and loving church family on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at 4:00 pm at Perritte Memorial United Methodist Church, 1025 Durst Street, Nacogdoches, Texas 75964.
