In loving memory: Jo Ellen (Joel) Lester Atkinson, was peacefully called home on January 14, 2023. At the age of 81, she is survived by six children John Laird Jr, Wade Laird, Lisa Istre, Michael Dickens, Charles Lester, and Rachael Woodson. 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren as well as 4 siblings.

JoEl thrived as a pastry chef making the best yeast rolls and pies around, for over 4 decades she made all sorts of confections with love and hard work. Everyone in the Lufkin community has probably enjoy a slice of her decorated cakes.

A southern woman from Oakdale Louisiana, she endured many hardships, but from them she upheld her great patience, compassion, and integrity. JoEl traveled to Texas in her 20's, calling it home.

JoEl loved to paint, and spend time growing her garden with her grandchildren, planting flowers, and relaxing while she watched longhorns graze. She had a contagious laugh that lit up a room, and an amazing singing voice. Her remarkable memory has been imprinted on everyone she met and will be passed for the future generations to cherish. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
